What You Need

Just the vGate iCar Pro BLE 4.0 and the EngineIQ Diagnostics app. It connects over Bluetooth LE, so there's no cable and no extra software to install. It typically costs ~$35.

  • Sleeps automatically, so it won't drain the battery
  • Physical switch to fully cut power
  • Compact enough to leave in the port

Connect It on iPhone

  1. Plug the vGate iCar Pro BLE 4.0 into the OBD2 port and turn the ignition to ON.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is on. You don't need to open Settings > Bluetooth or pair anything there.
  3. Open EngineIQ and tap Connect. If iOS asks to let EngineIQ use Bluetooth, tap Allow.
  4. Choose the vGate iCar Pro BLE 4.0 from the list. The app confirms when it's talking to your vehicle.

Connect It on Android

  1. Plug the vGate iCar Pro BLE 4.0 into the OBD2 port and turn the ignition to ON.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on, but don't pair the adapter in your phone's Bluetooth settings.
  3. Open EngineIQ and tap Connect. Allow the Nearby devices permission (Location on older Android versions); Android needs it to scan for Bluetooth LE devices.
  4. Choose the vGate iCar Pro BLE 4.0 from the list.

Using It With EngineIQ

The same five steps apply to every adapter:

  1. Find the OBD2 port. It's a 16-pin trapezoidal socket, almost always within reach of the driver's seat — under the dash near the steering column, sometimes behind a small cover. Every car sold in the US since 1996 has one.
  2. Plug the adapter in. Push it in firmly until it seats. Most adapters light up straight away, drawing power from the port itself.
  3. Turn the ignition to ON. The engine does not need to be running, but the key must be at least in the ON position. With the ignition fully off, the port has no power and the adapter can't talk to the vehicle.
  4. Connect from the EngineIQ app — not your phone's Bluetooth settings. Open EngineIQ, tap Connect, and pick your adapter from the list. Do not pair it in your phone's Bluetooth settings: these adapters use Bluetooth LE, which apps connect to directly. Pairing in system settings is the single most common reason an adapter appears to “not work.”
  5. Stay in range during a drive test. Keep your phone in the cabin. If the link does drop, EngineIQ keeps the readings it already captured and reconnects on its own — a dropout won't cost you the drive test.

If It Won't Connect

  • Check that the ignition is ON. With the key off, the port has no power and the adapter can't respond.
  • If you paired it in your phone's Bluetooth settings, forget it there and connect from the app instead.
  • Close other OBD2 apps. An adapter talks to one app at a time, so another app holding the connection blocks EngineIQ.
  • Unplug the adapter for a few seconds and seat it again firmly.
  • Turn your phone's Bluetooth off and on, then try Connect again.
  • Check that the adapter's power switch is on.
