What P0011 Means
P0011 indicates that the variable valve timing (VVT) system on Bank 1 is not achieving the camshaft position commanded by the engine control unit. The code definition from SAE J2012 is "'A' Camshaft Position — Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)," meaning the intake camshaft timing is either advancing too far or the system is not responding correctly to ECU commands.
Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine that contains cylinder 1. The VVT system adjusts camshaft timing to optimize performance, fuel economy, and emissions across different engine speeds and loads. Because the system is oil-actuated—using engine oil pressure to move the cam phaser—oil-related issues are the most common cause of P0011.
The ECU monitors the difference between commanded camshaft position and actual position reported by the camshaft position sensor. When the discrepancy exceeds a threshold for a specified time, P0011 sets and the check engine light illuminates.

Dirty or degraded engine oil is equally common. Sludge, varnish, or contaminated oil restricts flow through the narrow passages in the VVT solenoid and phaser. Vehicles with extended oil change intervals or frequent short trips are especially prone. An oil change alone often clears the code.
Stuck or faulty oil control valve (also called the VVT solenoid or camshaft actuator solenoid) regulates oil flow to the cam phaser. Carbon buildup or internal wear can cause the valve to stick open, closed, or respond sluggishly. The solenoid is usually accessible and inexpensive to replace.
Worn or damaged cam phaser is less common but occurs in high-mileage engines or those with poor maintenance history. Internal vanes wear, preventing the phaser from holding position. A rattling noise at cold start is a telltale sign.

If oil, electrical, and solenoid checks are normal, suspect a mechanical issue with the cam phaser or timing chain. If the VVT solenoid is faulty, replace it. The part is usually located on the front or top of the engine, near the camshaft. Replacement takes 30 minutes to an hour for most vehicles. Apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the solenoid O-ring before installation.
Cam phaser replacement requires removing the timing cover, timing chain, and camshaft gear. This is a multi-hour job that warrants professional service unless you have experience with timing systems. Use OEM or high-quality aftermarket parts; cheap phasers often fail prematurely.
